Disability Representation in Media - Call for Chapters

2/5/2024

I have been asked by Routledge to do a follow-up to my 2022 title Disability Representation in Film, TV, and Print Media. It will basically be a second edition but with a new title along the lines of Disability in the Media. The goal is to showcase original research and theoretical essays focusing on recent representations of disability in mainstream media such as film, television, advertising, video games, social media, etc.

Proposals for chapters based on original research are welcome from researchers from any academic discipline utilizing any appropriate research methodology and theoretical framework. Priority will be given to proposals that focus on media representations occurring within the past 5 years, but fresh looks at older representations or research on older media representations that have been overlooked will also be competitive. In addition, chapters that engage perceptions of media representations among both people with disabilities and the general population are encouraged. Citation style is APA 7th edition, and the publisher will require retrieval dates for any web sources without a doi. Word count of final chapters should be within the range of 6,000 to 8,000.

What to submit: send an email to me at msjeffress at gmail dot com by April 1, 2024, with "Disability in Media CFP" in subject line with answers to the following questions:

  1. What is your tentative chapter title?
  2. Do you or a co-author have a terminal degree in a relevant field? (Note, this is not required, and I desire to support and encourage young scholars, so graduate students and those who are ABD are welcome to submit. However, having edited several volumes, I would advise such contributors to consider adding a second author who has a terminal degree to avoid possible setbacks in the publisher's external review process).
  3. On a scale of 1-10, with 1 being “I have not started” and 10 “I am finished,” how far along are you in the research you plan to utilize for your chapter?
  4. Does your research involve any human participants, and if so, are you able to provide evidence of institutional ethics approval?
  5. What media and which representation(s) are the focus of your proposal?
  6. Please provide a brief 150-200 word abstract for your proposed chapter.
  7. Although not required, if you have a working draft of your paper, you are invited to attach it to your proposal to expedite the process.

Tentative schedule:

April 1, 2024: deadline to submit a proposal
April 29, 2024: initial decision to reject or to invite to submit a full first draft
July 26, 2024: deadline to receive complete first draft. Review process will begin immediately with an effort to provide a decision well ahead of next deadline.
Oct. 25, 2024: Feedback returned on drafts with either a decision to reject or provisionally accept for publication, pending completion of any requested revisions, which should only be minor at this point.
Dec. 2, 2024: Deadline for final draft
Jan. 9, 2025: manuscript submitted to publisher’s production team and roll off the presses between April and June 2025.

Welcome to my blog page. I write occasionally on topics I care about. I am a professor, a disability advocate and social critic. Above all, I am a lucky husband, father and grandparent.
